APRIL 2007

Welcome to the Fourth update to the MADDOG project
April came and April passed, again my attempts to build traffic yeild in about the same earnings. Althought things do not appear to be moving as fast money wise, in April I planted a few more seeds that will hopefully grow into a shrub or perhaps a tree. I have had some small victories, but it seems it is me against Google/Yahoo rankings and they move about as fast as a large company making a decision. You make a change one day and they recognize the change 3 weeks later. April has been a busy month and I have several updates to report. But first, lets get the earnings report out of the way, here goes.

Website Development in April

New Lyric Site

Lets talk about the good things that happened this month, one seed that I planted is a new lyric site called Lyrics For Music. Music Lyrics are search several thousand times a day according to statistics from WordTracker. And the keyword's I chose have the least amount of competition "Lyrics for Music". I purchased the Lyric Script from Lyric Scripts, it has proven to be an easy way to get a site off the ground and already fully functional.

In addition, I purchased a database of Lyrics from Oddity Software and imported thoose songs into my SQL databse so this new site is starting with over 200,000 lyrics! It has been added to Google's, Yahoo's and MSN's index but I am not ranking in the results yet which is expected for a new untrusted site. If the lyric site were to ever rank well, I feel this will be a great income booster as related to my adsense earnings. If you visit the site, I do have 2 other affiliates displaying ads along with Google's Adsense. The ads are blended really well with the site, now I just wait for the traffic....I have not received a click on this site yet.

New Baby Name Site

The second seed that was planted was a Baby Name Site, this site also chosen as a highly searched item and the words I chose have the least amount of competition. You can check the site over at Rare Baby Names. Again, I purchased the script and database from Oddity Software. My wife designed the banner and I made a few cosmetic changes. This also proved to be very easy site to implement, it has just started showing on the search engines. On page 63 on Google, and suprsingly on page 1 in MSN when you do a search for Rare Baby Names! But dont get too excited, I still havent really gotten that much traffic yet. Matter of fact not even one click! No love from Yahoo yet, they seem not too like my sites.

Updates on the PrePaid Legal Site

As far as the other sites, the PrePaid Legal received a new design, and my first Company Review was posted. This site is currently in all the search engine's index's however it is not ranking well with exception of MSN. I also have a few other affiliates running on this site, and I have had a few clicks but nothing to write home about. Again, MSN loves me, because I rank on the first page if you search the keywords "PrePaid Legal". Google and Yahoo hate this site, I am buried behind a bunch of stupid web sites with unrelated content. Still MSN is only sending less than ten visitors a day. I did realize that this is not highly searched term, but I was hoping the click pay out would be higher. I have received one click that was $1.56. So as you can see opportunity is here even though this will never be a high traffic site. Once this site is outfitted with some more content and build my rankings in Google and Yahoo, it still may help me hit my goal before the end of the year.

Updates on the Texas Mud Offroad Trails

The best thing I added to this site in April was a clickable map powerd by Google Maps and I was able to create the coordinates easily using Map Builder. By adding this map, my visitors are now sticking around a little longer. And gives the user a better experience. See this is another example that developing/designing web pages is a service, and I am very concerned with making the users happy. If the user experience is positive, and your content original and interesting they will come back. This is where I feel I am different from your traditional MFA sites. And the fringe benefits are you get more one-way links and visitors come back when they want to try a different trail.

The second update was an article about a monster rincon, which suprisingly according to my Asrep stats, is bringing in new traffic as well. I would love to concentrate more on articles, but given my current circumstances I dont get out much! One thing I would like to see increase with txmud.com is the quality reviews, I have people are really not that motivated to share infomration, I expected this to take off and it really has not yet. Other than that I have also added many ATV Events, that seems to be popular and I am beginning to get many request from folks in texas to add their Event.

Updates on the Texas BBQ site

I do plan on adding more content to this site and more detailed pictures, but for now, I have been busy with other projects so it was kinda put on the backburner in April.

Build that SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and this one thing I have begun to study and implement. The best resouce I have found so far is a free ebook located at Free SEO Book. Upon reading this guide, I have had to re-think my optimization strategies. The most notable strategy is getting one way quality text links to your site. I know there are many link exchanges out there, but do not use them. Reciprocal links may as well be non existent in the eyes of search engine algorithms. So, what do I do to get these links? I post on every blog and forum that lets me with the anchor text with my keywords. I know this is evil and some may consider it spamming, but you do have to push the limits to be successful on the internet. I have even been banned from a few forums :(.

How I found my ideal keywords is through Word Tracker. Yes it did cost $27 for a week, but hopefully now that I have these list printed out it will assist me in going for thoose highly searched items with the least competition out there. Last month I suggested Overture for Keyword searching, but upon using wordtracker I realize the results from overture are not accurate and perhaps skewed, I would not invest any money on the information that it provides. Be sure to have your keywords in the title, in the domain, as alt tags to your images, and listed in your content as many times as possible. They also have some neat list like the 1000 most searched terms and some other neat tools.

I have also began to pay more attention to the meta tags of my webpages, making each page different, and pertinent to the content. Google Meta Tags and you will find some good reads, although Google does not pay that much attention to them, I feel this is one of the reasons I rank well on MSN. Another important thing that I have done is upload a robots.txt file to the root of all my websites to tell spiders they are free to absorb all the content on the site. It also give you an insight how often and who is spidering your site through your web hosting statistics.

The only text you need in your robots.txt file is: User-agent: *

and that tells the spider visitng that it can search the whole site with no restrictions, you can also use the file to further restrict it, but why would anyone want to do that?

Another free serivce that could possibly build into an excellent SEO tool is Free Relevant Links. You put 5 text links on your site, and through their software other sites began linking to you. The longer you use the service, the more one way links that will build. I am currently using this on this site, the lyric site, and the Legal site. So far, I have received one link, but this will build over time.

Adsense Graphs

The earnings graph for April seemed pretty consistent with earnings from March. My goal however is to grow, Not stay the Same!

Adsense Earnings

As far as Pageviews go, I may still have a slight upward trend going in my direction through April which I hope to continue.

Project Mad Dog Cost

This is just a quick list of cost I have incurred so far:
These figures include cost of hosting, domain names, Sctipts, and database's purchased.

In closing for April, although it seems not much progress has been acheived as far as earnings and pageviews. It was still an important month, not only because of the additional sites implemented but also because of how much knowledge that was acquired. I want to thank anyone that may be following the project, feel free to give me a shout with any questions, my email is patrick@greatadsense.net and we will talk to you in June with the results from May!

Take me back to the March stats!
